Athea United A.F.C was first established in 1979. It started off with one junior team which was an d member of the Limerick Desmond League and the FAI.

In 1980/81 season, our home pitch was a rented field in Upper Dirreen where we stayed for roughly 20 years until the Club purchased land in 1995 in Lower Dirreen.

The Club was constantly expanding with an underage set up in the mid 1990’s and then became an d member of the Limerick Desmond Schoolboys/girls League.

The Club over the next number of years developed the land, a Clubhouse with dressing rooms, kitchen, referees’ room, meeting room and a storeroom was developed alongside 2 full side soccer pitches and a sand pitch with floodlights for training.
